Regarding Mr. Schmitz decision to become an atheist, I have no idea. Notice his comments, though, to the July 2008 Washington Post article "There are no Atheists":
>>I have, in fact, never met an atheist. When a person
professes to be one, I ask him to offer me the proof that God does not exist.
I’ve never had anyone successfully respond to that question.
Reply: That is because your question is a logical fallacy. You cannot prove a
negative (see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_proof for more). I cannot prove that
unicorns, leprechauns and centaurs have never existed either, but spending an
inordinate time debating them is silly in the extreme.

There is a logical fallacy in Mr. Schmitz' current thinking in denying the existence of God by comparing Him to a celestial Santa Claus, which cannot be disproven (so they say) and "debating it is silly in the extreme".
My Reply: We can trace the origins of unicorns, leprechauns, centaurs and Santa Claus for they ALL have derived from human created myths. There is no evidence at all, whatsoever, of monotheism having come from human superstition or myth. Instead, it is a logical well-founded conclusion, even today with all our scientific data and advances.
Nothing else, outside of that logic, makes any sense. What other explaination is there for our expanding universe that points to a moment in time when it all started, a "beginning" as stated in Genesis 1:1. Something or Someone had to have caused that beginning! That pre-condition means that the universe did not always exist. What caused the existence?
There is no scientific explaination that explains how the basic kinds of life forms came into existence. The Biblical "kind" simply means "to bring forth" and therefore any related animal is related in its ability to "bring forth". The Bible does not have to subscribe to a human classification based on observation of scientists. Horses and donkeys can bring forth a mule, but that is where "evolution" has reached its limits. No matter how much manipulation is applied, horses will never "evolve" outside the Biblical definition of "kind".
I used to firmly believe that apes and humans had a common ancestor. I did not stop believing that because I wanted to believe in Adam and Eve. I came to believe in Adam and Eve because it holds more evidence and requires less faith than believing that evolution is responsible for our current human condition. Such a thought is utterly impossible. Every human being, if it were possible to trace our roots, would arrive at the same human couple who started it all: Adam and Eve. We are all related, not by a common ancestor of a lower form, but a common ancestor of equal or superior form which is why no race is superior to another. We are all brothers and sisters.
Instead of a theist who has become an atheist (which today are a dime a dozen) for whatever reasons that may be (and there are plenty of unanswered questions that push people in that direction), as an atheist who became a theist for logical conclusions, I hope to give sound reasons for belief in God.
My hope is that Mr. Schmitz may someday snap out of his atheism and regain his faith in the One True God.
